Weekly journal 3

Most of my site's architect is A.O. Coltman .Based on my researches, Art Deco architecture contained some elements like Cubic forms, ziggurat shapes- a terraced pyramid where it gets smaller the higher you go, complex grouping of rectangles and squares, bands of bright and arresting colours, zigzag design, strong sense of line and an illusion of pillars.

I have noted down some building elements in this post with the link of my site photos.

This is the photos of Central Market

  1. a bold ziggurat design has been chosen by the architect in many parts of the building such as its terraced gable on its main entrance and other entrances.
  2. the interlocking rings on each of its entrance – among the geometric motifs used.
  3. The main entrance has ziggurat elements which is is a terraced pyramid with each storey smaller than the one below it.
  4. The subtle horizontal band of pink textured concrete running across the breadth of Central Market is also characteristic of one of the techniques used in Art Deco, in which bands or columns of contrasting materials are used to create a sense of line or division.
  5. its recessed main entrance is said to create the illusion of a passageway to a stage set.
  6. symmetrical receding abstract planes and aerodynamic streamlining are typical of later Art Deco details
  7. Windows are made by 'Carolex' glass to minimize the entry of too much sunlight .The Colorex rolled panel windows permits lights through while keeping the heat out, thus keeping you cool.
  8. There is a frieze-like corregated band that runs around the structure and 22 entrances

  1. the exterior facade is made from horizontal bands
  2. This building has a flat roof
  3. The windows are long and narrow so that it can absorb more sunlight for natural light to brighten up the interior.
  4. Below the windows there are some repeated geometric patterns that create a sense of theatrical opulence
  5. There is some blue and brown bands that run across the building which accentuate the space between the top and bottom windows
  6. The two shades of yellow and ochre on its facade with dashes of blue on its windows has drawn attention to the geometric forms and clean lines that characterize Art Deco architecture.
  7. The building has a corner set at a 45° angle, giving it a strong geometric shape and separating it into three unit bays.
  8. It has a sunroof ( did not appear in my photos ) . It is built above the air well and adjacent to the stairwell. It allow natural sunlight to brighten up the building during the day.

  1. classic tall, narrow windows framed by metal muntins ( allow sunlight to enter the building)
  2. Ribs beam out from the archway and taper off into bold horizontal bands. The sharp, clean lines suggest at an inchoate sunburst motif.
  3. It houses Radio Malaya and the building looks like a vintage radio if looking from a far view.
  4. The projecting panels of walls in between the windows are stepped, creating the illusion of depth. Stepped pillasters begin at the 3rd floor, flanking the windows.
  5. It has a curved frontage. It actually built in curve because want to follow the road shape.
  6. The front faƧade has a central panel flanked by two tower-like pylons
